Why are The holidays in December?

Holidays and Traditions

There are certainly a number of holidays in other months; but both the eastern and the western religions have placed holidays in December, or in another winter month, to cheer people up and give them a reason to celebrate. In the old days, before electricity, winter was often a darker and colder time, with longer nights; and that made festivals that were about light very welcome. Even now, in our modern world where we all have plenty of lights, winter can still be a time of changing temperatures and stormy weather, so a holiday is a nice diversion. Whether it's the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, where candles on the menorah are lit for eight nights; or how Christians celebrate Christmas with a lighted and decorated tree; or the Hindu and Sikh festival of lights called Diwali (which doesn't always fall in December but is usually in the late autumn) with its displays of fireworks, these holidays bring worshipers reasons for joy during the winter season.
