Who is an April fool?

Holidays and Traditions
April Fools' Day
New Zealand Politics and Society

April first is April fools day, a special day designated to playing tricks on people.

If somebody gets the better of you with a white lie on April the first, then you are an April Fool. It can be something as easy as pointing your finger at the chest of your "target" and say Ketchup, can make the targeted person look down to see if there are any ketchup there. If the target got tricked, then he/she is an April fool.

Most newspapers and even magazines and TV channels in Norway and Denmark play elaborate jokes on their citizens.

The joke in Denmark in 2009 was that the Bridge between Denmark and Sweden was to be pulled down in favour of a new tunnel to be made, this because it would be more environmental friendly. (The Øresund Bridge was completed only a few years back.) Newspapers and TV stations experienced something commonly known as a telephone storm after the Danes heard about and believed it. Made quite a few April fools here in Denmark.

One of the most elaborate jokes in Norway was back when black and white TVs were common and only a very few had colour ones. In prime time news broadcast the newsreader told the general public that everybody could now get colour TV, even on their black and white TV sets. The newsreader explained that it was dependent on total wattage drained in the entire house, and if the drain was very close to xx (a fixed number) then the colours would appear. This sent half the Norwegian TV owners around their houses and flats turning on and off electrical equipment in order to create the correct drain of wattage. Some even claim to have seen colours (after staring at their sets very closely for quite some time).

We are all at risk of becoming an April fool due to the fact that we all actually want to believe. We get deceived easily. It is world wide accepted though, that an April Fool Joke is not to be causing harm to anybody.
