New Year's Day (January 1st) is the most traditional holiday. New Year's Eve is also an important day to "wash off" the whole years dirt (literary and figuratively) to start the new year with a fresh mind.

End of War day (August 15th). For the United States, it is V-day, and some criticize Japan's using "End of War" rather than "defeat", but it is generally taken that the majority of the Japanese were tired of the war around this time and relieved as well as lost energy at the defeat. Along with the A-bomb memorial days in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the week before this day is rather solemn with the media focusing on how people lived during WW2.

Golden Week (4/29-5/5). With three holidays (4/29 the birthday of Emperor Showa; 5/3 Constitution Day; 5/5 Children's Day) and an extra between 5/3 and 5/5, this week means big for most of the Japanese who work regularly for companies.
