What are the Characteristics of a pumpkin?

Pumpkins

Characteristics are descriptions of the pumpkin. For example, how big around? How deep or fibrous the flesh? How early or late maturing the variety? How hulled or hull-less the seed? How many outside lines? How many seeds? How much of a seed cavity? How smooth or coarse a skin? How resistant to powdery mildew? How strong of a handle, and of an attachment of handle to fruit? How tall? How thick or thin of a wall? What color? What shape? What weight? The answers are important in the ultimate use of the pumpkin. For example, is the pumpking going to be used as decoration? Jack-o-lanterns need to be symmetrically round for aesthetics, later maturing, and broad-based for support. They need consistent, strong color. They need skin cooperative enough to be carved, but strong enough not to cave in. Ornamentals need attractive color and shape, and strong bases and handles. Or is the pumpking going to be used as food? In that case, a particularly good idea is to use the powdery mildew resistant varieties. Resistance means less chemicals in conventional production, and makes organic production easier. Pies need the smaller, sweeteer-tasting sugar varieties. Raw or roasted seeds need to be hull-less, or nearly so. Stock feed needs large size, and thick flesh.
