Holidays and Traditions

The Christian holy days are based on old Pagan holy days. When a new culture or religion sweeps through a region it is easier to create commonalities, then the culture can be completely assimilated. The separateness becomes blurry. Christmas was the Winter Solstice, Dec. 21-23. It celebrated the return of the sun (son), the sun god is reborn. Easter was Spring equinox, March 21-23. Named after the Goddess Eostra, (Ostara), it represents the fertility of the land and animals giving birth. The egg and the rabbit are both ancient symbols of fertility.
