Do you have comparisons of a child's life in the 1800' to now?

Jobs & Education
Comparisons
Colonial America
Holidays and Traditions

Health

Children faced high risks of life-threatening diseases that are now very curable. It was very common to lose several children in 1 family or many in 1 community. There were no vaccines or "health care". Typhoid fever and other outbreaks like flu took many lives of kids.

Work

Most every child in the 1800s worked everyday on family farms, or hired out as laborers to neighbors, or became an apprentice to an adult with a skill, such as blacksmith, farrier, stable hand, etc. There were no child labor laws, so if jobs required long hours, children could work but also had no protections against abuse.

School

Not every child went to school. First, not every community had a school. Second, more males than females attended school; later, more girls joined the boys in getting an education. However, most kids only attended 4 to 8 yrs; over time, that changed, with more kids attending at least high school. However, in families with money or who valued education, children often attended college.

Home Life and Play

Both girls and boys used more imagination rather than toys. Girls may have had only 1 doll. Often work and "play" were combined, such as fishing and hunting with adults in order to feed the family. Girls learned sewing and how to cook and take care of the home. Girls and boys often created collections, for example, marbles for boys, hair ribbons for girls. Things like satin ribbons were expensive to most farm families.

Growing Up

Most "children" became teens or young adults expected to marry early. If unmarried by age 25, most females were considered "spinsters" or "old maids". However, people married at all ages, from 13 yrs old to their 60s.
