Shut Up and Run. How to devote your life to your favorite business and turn it into a source of income?

Running can become not just a hobby, but a lifestyle and its main component. So at one point the author of the book Shut Up and Run Robin Arzon decided. After an incredible incident in her life, she managed to overcome her fears with the help of sports and make it her main source of income. Now the girl conquers ultramarathons, trains athletes and just lives a happy life.

- Robin, in your book you say that you reconsidered your life goals at the moment when a meeting with friends unexpectedly ended with an attack on you. How did it happen?
- I was 20 years old when I was held hostage at gunpoint in a bar in New York. Since that day, I have lived every day like the last.

- But you weren't into sports as a child. How did this situation turn your life in this direction?
- I was forced to step over the trauma that this story caused me. There is something very daring and inspiring about just stepping out of your comfort zone and pushing your body into an uncomfortable position. Running was and always will be such a catharsis for me.

- Many lead an active lifestyle just to keep fit. But for them it is more a necessity than a hobby. How to make sports fun?
- Find an activity that you really enjoy doing, and it will never seem like a punishment. For me, running is what I like. I am eager to go the long distance. For some, dancing or yoga can be such an outlet.

- Most Russians run or do fitness as a hobby after work. But how do you make it a source of income? How did you personally manage to start making money from your hobby?
- It took years of hard work to get to where I am in the fitness industry. My advice is to take risks, be brave, know your worth and be ready to go.

- Can anyone start playing sports and making money on it? Or do you need certain qualities?
- First of all, I believe that anyone who loves to move his body and is ready to work on himself should consider himself an athlete. If you are truly passionate about fitness and want to make a career out of it, discipline and resilience are two of the most important qualities. Develop them in yourself!

- Where to get strength and courage to change your life?
- I think that if you don't try, you won't know. You program your failure even when you only admit failure. I've been a fiasco so many times, but it was all worth what I have in the end. What's the point in staying in a place that you know doesn't make you happy? You can also try something, and if that doesn't work, you just turn around and go the other way.

- If you could come back and change something in your life, would you start working on yourself earlier?
- No. I believe that this was the path that I had to go. All the trials I faced have turned me into the person I am today. I am grateful for all this.

Pause running. What to do when outdoor training is prohibited

Athletes are about how to survive self-isolation.

- Robin, what does your training look like today, during when did it get harder to leave the house?
- During self-isolation, I included other activities such as yoga in my schedule. It helps me stay fit during this volatile period. I still run outside, but not long distances and not as often as usual. I currently live in New York, a city with many restrictions, and it is important to respect them for my own safety and the safety of others.

- You have already run 26 marathons, despite your health problems. How do restrictions affect your runs? Long distance running is harder than it could be?
- I am a Type 1 diabetic and this is something I must keep in mind, especially given the demands I place on my body as an athlete ... I do think there are certain risks, but I know my body and I know what it's capable of. Insulin is just another tool in my superhero kit.

Running vocabulary: real term or made-up word? Try to guess!

A test that will tell you how good you are at running.

- Do you have any rituals before starting?
- I strongly believe that visualization is the key to any successful race. There are several steps I take to get inspired to run:

  • Select the goal you want to achieve and close your eyes. This can be done anywhere.
  • Create a 15-second film about where you are, what you see, what you hear, who is with you, what you are wearing, and how you smell. Use all 5 senses! Feel the sweat. Hear Hurray !. The middle of the race is unpredictable, but you know how you want to finish. Find that perfect finish in your head. The more you can feel these emotions and live them inside yourself, the more you will hold on to them. This is how you program yourself for success.
  • Practice is important! Do this every day. You will become good not only at visualization, but also in everything else. To see clearly and precisely is to believe in this mental rehearsal.

What would you recommend to those who also loves to run, but is afraid to take a step into the unknownto give up your unloved job?
- Here are my rules for those who want to make a career in any field:

  • Make an honest inventory of your current personality traits and skills . How can you upgrade them?
  • Lay the foundation. Don't try to get into someone else's head, instead offer help to those you admire and seek mentorship.
  • Just get started. Fear is paralyzing. There will never be a good time to start pumping yourself. Use fear as fuel. Fear is your friend. Jealousy indicates what worries you, and fear indicates what needs to be worked on. Take action. Don't try to figure it out.
  • Discomfort is your biggest ally. Nervousness only means that you really care.
