How to choose poles for Nordic walking. Are ski poles suitable?

Nordic walking poles are special sports equipment that has nothing to do with trekking or ski poles. This is due not to regular marketing tricks, but to the Nordic walking technique. For its implementation, that is, for effective Nordic walking training, we need sticks of a certain height and constructiveness. They can be telescopic or tall, aluminum or with carbon content - here the choice is yours.

The main thing to check when buying is the lanyard. The very thing that attaches to the handle of the stick. It should look like a cropped mitten, put on the hand as well: four fingers together, a large one separately. The lanyard is tightly fixed on the wrist and should be as comfortable and fit as possible. Ideally, the lanyard is attached to the stick using a special mechanism and, if necessary, detached from the handle. In this case, the distance between the attachment point and the lanyard should be minimal. This design of the poles will allow you to easily perform the Nordic walking technique and its main elements: pushing yourself forward using the back muscles and active hand work.

How to find the height of the poles?

There are several selection methods. The Internet is replete with strange formulas and videos, but instructors from the leading Russian federations of Nordic walking agree that a beginner athlete should start mastering the technique with minimum-height sticks (walker height multiplied by 0.66). Try to complete all the elements - if you don't have any difficulties, you can make the stick a little higher.

The hardest part of the Nordic walking technique is arm and torso work. The task is this: bring your hand forward, put the stick at the fulcrum at an angle of 45 degrees to the surface, transfer the weight to the stick, and, without bending your elbow, push yourself forward from the stick, turning on your back muscles and even the press. In the rear position, the hand opens to the same height relativeabout the torso, as well as the front. You will be surprised, but most of even young and fairly athletic debutants cannot perform this element the first time. One workout with an instructor will be enough to feel the level of load and get rid of the stereotype about sports for grandmothers forever.

How to check that the poles are chosen correctly?

Put on the lanyards, raise your hands in front of you , open the brush and release the sticks from the palm - they should remain exactly in the same place, hanging in them. As for the height of the stick, its correctness is tested at the time of training: when you bring your hand forward, the stick rises to the fulcrum at an angle of 45 degrees, while you calmly hold the handle with your fist, without pulling the entire body behind the stick and not bending your elbow. The second option is to stand up straight, feet shoulder-width apart, put the stick straight in front of you, close to the body. The lanyard should be at about the level of your belly button. An error of one centimeter is allowed.
