Strict Rules Margot Robbie Has To Follow To Play Harley Quinn
Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn How the actress prepared for filming
The audience drew attention to Margot Robbie back in 2013, when the actress played a spectacular naughty blonde in The Wolf of Wall Street. And in 2016, she finally captivated the audience, appearing on the screen in the role of a daring madwoman from Gotham - the Joker's lover Harley Quinn. Although the girl could boast of a slender figure before filming in Suicide Squad, she was not always so dexterous and flexible. To fit into the image, Robbie had to not only improve his physical shape, but also master acrobatics and elements of aerial gymnastics. We tell how the actress has changed over the past years and what her training included in the pre-filming period.
Not all roles are the same: how did Margot Robbie change?
It seems that Margot has never had problems with the figure. The girl is distinguished by refined forms, and she has not yet had to radically lose weight or gain weight for the role. But this does not mean that all the pictures were given to the actress equally easily. For example, before filming the film The Wolf of Wall Street, she did not have to exhaust herself with training. The figure was quite suitable for the trophy wife of the main character - a stereotypical and narrow-minded, but devilishly sexy blonde.

And here's the movie Tarzan. The legend, which appeared on the screens in 2016, still had to prepare. For the role of Jane Porter, the actress lost a bit of weight to look more like a sophisticated Disney heroine. However, even then, Robbie did not deny herself small joys. She says she could eat sweets while filming.

How did Margot Robbie train for the role of Harley Quinn?
Squad Suicide came out the same year as Tarzan. However, in the film from Warner Bros. and DC Films, Robbie appeared not only in a completely different image, but also as if with a new figure. Despite the fact that the picture received very controversial reviews, most viewers appreciated Margot's acting talent and her serious approach to preparation. To achieve flexibility and strength, the actress spent a lot of time in the gym.
Harley Quinn's main outfit in the film is ultrashort shorts and a crop top, so Margot needed tostretch, but fit the image, not lose too much weight. This was not the only and far from the main task. In Suicide Squad, the queen of the criminal Gotham masterfully owns the body and shows the wonders of acrobatics and aerial gymnastics (which is only one scene in the prison). To perform all the necessary tricks and adequately convey the character's plasticity, Robbie worked hard in the gym, took body ballet lessons, did stretching on hinges and boxed.
According to trainer Andy Hacker, who worked with the actress, on preparation was allotted very little time - only three weeks. To meet such a short time frame, Hacker decided to put the load on the right muscle groups only and not waste precious days on unnecessary exercises. Margot focused on the muscles on the outer side of the thigh, preferred exercises with low weight, but with a lot of sets.

To show off Harley Quinn's splits and flexibility, the actress had to pay special attention to stretching. Robbie did yoga with an emphasis on stretching and body ballet. And to make the training even more effective, the trainer added weights on the legs to the exercises at the machine. So you can perfectly tighten your buttocks, says Hacker.
Another secret ingredient to success is swimming. It helps to work well different muscle groups, and also provides a payload for the heart. For one of the scenes, the actress had to take not quite typical lessons. The girl turned to a professional swimmer to learn how to hold her breath for a long time. Margot learned to meditate underwater and slow down her metabolism, and did exercises to increase lung capacity.

To keep fit in her free time from filming and to prepare for some roles, the actress works out in the gym. Some of the exercises in the workout plan she especially likes. Among them:
- Bodyweight squats - 4 sets of 20 reps;
- Triceps Extension - 3-4 x 25 per arm;
- Side Dumbbell Raises - 1 x 30;
- Standing dumbbell rotation - 1 x 40 (20 forward and 20 backward rotations);
- Dumbbell Curl - 1 x 20 for each arm;
- Straight curls - 1 x 25;
- Shell - 1 x 25 on each side.

Like Robband did you eat during training?
It is logical to expect that such a voluminous set of training would be accompanied by a strict nutrition plan. But this is not the case. According to Margot herself, diets are extremely difficult for her, and she tries not to adhere to particularly strict rules: she can afford fast food, and sweets, and a glass of wine at dinner.
The actress's current coach, David Higgins, said in an interview that the breakfast-the-main meal setting has nothing to do with proper nutrition and is just a relic of the 1940s marketing campaign, when bacon was heavily advertised in the United States. Therefore, Robbie skips breakfast: her first meal is at about 12:00, and her dinner is at 20:00. So the actress manages to take a 16-hour hunger break. During this time, the body manages to assimilate any food and recover, Higgins said.

In 2020, Margot Robbie returned to the role of the crazy and spectacular Harley Quinn in the movie Birds of Prey. Surely she again had to spend hours in the gym to return to tone and again fight opponents on the screens of cinemas. Despite sometimes tough training - ballet, extreme breathing exercises, acrobatics - in general, the actress's training routine is quite universal. These exercises can be safely taken into service in order to diversify your own activities. But remember, it's important to adjust your workload based on your ability and skill level.
