Running Steps: Beyond limits
Marathon at the Pole of Cold: a runner covered 50 km at a temperature of -60 degrees
Not everyone can run a marathon, especially in conditions under which it is undesirable even to leave the house. But an extreme from Moldova, for the sake of a good cause, is ready for anything, even to run 50 kilometers at minus 60. We tell why he did it and how he felt.
The Oymyakon area is considered the Pole of Cold, where it was registered 80 years ago record temperature -71.2 degrees Celsius. It was there that Dmitry Voloshin decided to test himself for strength. According to weather reports, the perceived temperature was minus 67. This is an extremely low and very dangerous temperature for running.
Why did he do it?
The race was charitable and it took place as part of the Unfrozen project ... Its main goal is to draw attention to the problem of cerebral palsy (CP) and help 4-year-old girl Eva Pismenyuk, who suffers from this disease.
The Department of Culture of the Oymyakon ulus plans to come up with a proposal to the ministries of foreign relations, entrepreneurship and sports in order to organize an international charity marathon at the Pole of Cold in 2020.
How is this possible?
Voloshin himself says that this was the most difficult test in his sports career. It's like a spacewalk, a terrible frost and a lack of air. No equipment can protect against this kind of frost. I hope I didn't freeze my face while running. It was very difficult to breathe - there was very little oxygen in the air, and the mask was clogged with ice. This is where my freediving experience in holding my breath came in handy.

Test: can you overcome the marathon?
Test yourself and find out if you are ready to master the distance of 42.2 km.
Despite all the difficulties, the athlete managed to establish record. He finished in six hours. Thus, Dmitry set a running record at ultra-low temperatures.
Before that, a marathon runner set his record from Russia Ilya Pestere . He ran 38 km in 52-degree frost, spending three hours and 53 minutes on the distance. But a policeman from Italy Paolo Venturini last year conquered 75 kilometers in the Iranian desert, where the temperature reached + 67.
Running vocabulary: real term or made-up word? Try to guess!
A test that will tell you how good you are at running.
However, we do not recommend repeating the act of an extreme. Up to minus 15 degrees, you can run freely on the street, but it is not recommended to engage in lower temperatures - you can breathe in cold air. At best, you just get a sore throat, at worst, you get pneumonia. Therefore, we advise you to move your workout to the arena.
If you do decide to go for a run in the fresh frosty air, do not forget to choose the right equipment.
What to wear for a run in cold weather?
In cold weather, it is important to dress in layers. Several thin layers of a special high-tech material will protect you better than one thick one.
When choosing equipment, remember that in addition to keeping warm, clothes must breathe, that is, remove moisture without hindering movement.
