Triathlon is an incredibly difficult sport that requires concentration on three disciplines at once. How to find strength and motivation in yourself and where to start for those who just want to try themselves in these competitions? We talked about this with a coach and multiple Ironman, coach of the World Class Stepan Vakhmin .

- What is the innovativeness of your approach to training?
- In fact, there is no innovation. It's just that the vision itself can be different. I am a person from fitness, and have never worked in elite sports. I have always been attracted by fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Previously, this topic was not very well known, there was no concept of fitness at all. And now the concept that I am promoting is related to this. The athletes we work with are solely for health reasons. Hardly any of them are willing to sacrifice it for the sake of the result. In fact, any result achieved by our amateurs, in the brightest prospects, is a world champion. But next year there will be another world championship, and in five years there will already be five, and hardly anyone will remember it.

- What about big-time sports?
- I am currently working with a trainer, and we often discuss such issues. It turned out that professionals today have the same approach to sports. Any injury will prevent the athlete from developing. It will come out anyway when training with high intensity. A healthy approach and regularity are important, so sports and fitness are inextricably linked.

- Do you think it is possible to train quickly in a triathlon?
- This is a very long sport. The athlete has developed over the years, decades. I know guys who achieve top results in 2-3 years, but these are stars that then fade away. Each has its own goal, and each goes to it in its own way. I've been in the top ten in Russia for five years now and I don't want to stop. For many, the World Cup is the end point, but I don't think so. She is not in life. It is better to hold your position for a long time than once to reach heights and fall.

- Do you agree that everyone has their own Ironman?
- This is what triathlon teaches ... For example, I always tell my students about conditional balance. You can't start exercising a lot while you're in trouble with your family or work. Triathlon is not a place to get away from problems. This is a sport where you need to come happy. Many people just run away from themselves - exercising for a large number of hours, you simply forget that you have some business and problems. This is not very correct.

- How do you maintain a balance between training, family and work?
- I made a decision that family comes first, work comes second , on the third - sports. And if I have any problems in the first two areas, I can postpone training. Let it be a year or two, but I'll deal with the first and move on to the second.

- Where do you find motivation?
- It helps me that I I work as a coach. I do many exercises with students, and they also really like it. They see me running kilometers at high speeds and understand that this can be done. It turns out a kind of energy exchange. This is very important, because we achieve results not in competitions, but in hard training. That's the key.

- If a client comes to you and says he wants to prepare to triathlon, what distance would you recommend to start?
- This is a very common question. The first thing we do is check health, it all depends on that. But most of the time I recommend sprint. This is the simplest distance, and if a person somehow swims, rides a bicycle, runs or walks a little (and some of my clients just go through this stage), then sprint is real. Honestly, I did 10 Ironman or more, but none of them ran to the end. I always took a step.

- How do you feel about the fact that in the States people have a simpler attitude to the Ironman philosophy, but here they puff on the result?
- Of course, everything is too high here, but if you look at the distance, more than half of them go on foot ... For me, there is only a winner and awardees. What difference does it make if you came eighth or twenty-eighth. Everything is inside. The main thing is that your goal was half (or any other distance), and you did it.

The only advice that I give to all my clients is that even if you have walked the entire distance on foot, gather your strength into a fist and run the last two kilometers. You must cross the finish line in agony. I cite the example of Jan Frodeno, who won the first time by going one step at each meal station. And why are you worse than a world champion?

- What do you focus on your clients on the distance? What should you watch out for?
- The first factor is pleasure, because if a person doesn't like it, he will stop doing it. Concentration on inner feelings is important. Even in training, we follow this. If you do not feel very well, sit down, rest, feel your body and continue.

- What do you think is more dangerous: when people who have done 226 score on sports, or when after 226 start to open more and more extreme distances?
- I have a double opinion on this. Whoever made the Ironman and stopped triathlon most likely did it to show off in the office. But on the other hand, those who did 226 often go to shorter distances, becausethat they take less time to prepare. Those who do a lot and often are most likely attracted to travel, in my opinion. It's hard to call it a competition. The question here is two things - preparation and money. But what is the use of this, it is unclear.

- Anyone can prepare for the sprint?
- If they have no medical conditions and the supervising doctor allows them to exercise, yes. You don't have to ride a bike for the smoke to come out. And you can walk. At the same distance, a man walked next to me at a rather fast pace and did not stop, but I ran at his pace from point to point.

- What helps you to get ready before the start?
- Before the distance I do not like to be distracted by anything or anyone. I always tell myself that the main task is to show that you trained and not others. And if I show my maximum, which I showed in training, for me it will be one hundred percent completion of the task. I've already won the race.

- How not to panic when someone is overtaking you?
- Everyone has their own race! Just enjoy yours and don't think about others.
