For the first time, more than a hundred applications were received for participation in the tournament, which already exceeds the number allowed by the regulations: the players of the men's grid of the tournament have yet to qualify to get into the 64 strongest. Sportsmen from St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg, Vologda, Perm, Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk will gather in Moscow.

Scheme of the competition
Competitions will be held according to the Olympic system with a drawing of all places. The Russian Championship will be a key stage in the formation of the national team to participate in the European Team Championship, which will be hosted by Portugal in April. Russia is still playing in the third division, but, according to the head coach of the team, Arnis Tikhvinsky, our national team is able to rise one step higher.

Arnis Tikhvinsky, head coach of the team: “ The European Championship consists of three divisions. The first is played by the strongest European teams such as England, France, Germany, Scotland, Wales and other squash leaders. A sort of top, where everyone else is striving to get. According to the results of the European Championship, the teams that took the first and second places move to the higher division, and the teams that finished the tournament in the last two lines in their divisions move one step lower. Last year the championship was held in my hometown Riga, where we took 4th place out of 18 possible. Left with a wooden medal, so to speak. The year before, we were the last in Malta. So progress is evident. This year there are good chances to be among the prize-winners ”.
The Championship of Russia has been regularly held relatively recently, with the emergence of a new squash federation. A few years ago, a maximum of 15-20 athletes took part in the tournament and the competition was held irregularly.
